then why would it be a particularly foolish idea to begin by calculating (32)60 and (48)28?
Starting with those multiplications would produce four-digit numbers that you then would have to divide --- without a calculator! Yuck! ALWAYS CANCEL BEFORE YOU MULTIPLY!!! Cancel the factor of 16 in the fraction on the left and the factors of 4 in the fraction on the right:

Now, cancel the factor of 3 and, only when you are entirely through cancelling, multiply:

If you ever have to do arithmetic with numbers bigger than two-digits, you are probably making a problem unnecessarily hard for yourself. Don't do that!
