Right, we want a word that does NOT mean "miserliness." The sentence says that her ____ should not be confused with miserliness. In other words, she is something that is DIFFERENT from miserliness, and she is always been willing to help people. "Thrift" fits because someone who is thrifty/frugal, like a miser, usually does not spend a lot of money, so he/she might be misunderstood and thought to be a miser.
