After reading this passage, the first thing to notice is the opposition of growth versus constraints in the passage.

The passage is saying that species (could be humans, animals, plants, etc) manage to keep reproducing through advantages gained through interacting with their environment. This allows them to "balance" or "reconcile" the need to reproduce with the fact that there are always limiting or constraining factors on the involuntary or "innate" need to reproduce.

Best thing here is to notice the opposing balance of growth to constraints. That means you are looking for a word that will relate to balance. Even if you can't make heads or tails of the passage, noticing the contrast of something bigger with something smaller, will help to locate the right word.

"Reconcile," which is similar to "resolve" is the closest word that fits.
