what if we just got both sides by itself by adding Y in QTY A and subtracting y in Qty B and we get 1>-x or qty a > qty b in the first instance. The second try we subtract -1 from qty a and we are left with -y and in Qty b we add x and we are left with Y, and now qty b > qty A this will make D the answer. Is this a good strategy rather than picking numbers?

Hi!
We can't add Y in one column and then subtract Y in the other column. We must do the exact same thing to both sides. If we add Y to one column, we must add Y to the other column.

Plugging in or thinking about x and y along the number line works best here.

0 _ x _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ y _ 1

In this case, 1 - y < y - x

0 _ _ _ x _ y _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _1

In this case, 1 - y > y - x

So the answer is (D).

Hope that helps :)
