Hi Jiahao,

Let's take a look:

James Boswell’s Life of Samuel Johnson is generally thought to have established Boswell as the first great modern biographer; yet the claim of __precedence__ could be made for Johnson himself as author of a life of Richard Savage.

"James Boswell’s Life of Samuel Johnson" is a book. It was written by James Boswell (JB), and it's about Samuel Johnson's life (SJ). Most people think that JB's book was the first great biography. So JB was the first great biographer.

The second sentence tells us that the first great biographer ("claim of precedence") might actually have been SJ. This is because SJ wrote a book about the life of Richard Savage.

I hope this helps clarify!
Sam
