The United States (has/have) large trade deficits with several other nations.

has (US); has or have (UK)

Different English speakers treat this differently. The United States, a single country, is construed here as singular. In the US, we use the singular verb, so only "has" is acceptable. In the UK, "have" may be accepted as well. One caveat: if the sentence were about a quality of the individual states, rather than the single country, then only "have" would be acceptable.
