How can you tell if a large number is divisible by 3?

The large number is divisible by 3 if and only if the sum of the digits is also a number divisible by 3. 

For example, take the larger number 2187.  2+1+8+7 = 18, which is divisible by 3, so this must mean 2187 is divisible by 3.
